Regional variants: Copy vs Translate
A variant is a publication target, not a translation target. You select the base language (Portuguese), VidAI translates once, and each of its enabled variants (Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal)) gets its own localization slot on YouTube. Every variant is in one of three states:
- Copy — the parent's translation is published into the variant's slot, byte for byte. Free: no extra credits. Right whenever the variant shares the parent's language and script (Brazilian and European Portuguese, Latin-American, Mexican and US Spanish, British, Indian and Australian English). This is the default for regional variants.
- Translate — a separate translation aimed at that variant, billed like any other language. Required where copying would be wrong because the script differs — Traditional Chinese for Taiwan and Hong Kong, Serbian in Latin script, romanized Hindi — and optional where regional wording matters enough to pay for it. Copy is the default for every variant; you switch any of them to Translate per variant in Settings. The 3 script variants marked above (Chinese (Taiwan), Chinese (Hong Kong), Chinese (Traditional)) are where Copy gives the wrong characters — switch them to Translate if you publish there.
- Off — a variant you do not want published at all. Untick it in Settings → Translation → Sub-languages; it stops being published from the next job on (existing localizations stay as they are).
Copy and Translate apply per variant, in both publishing modes (Fast API mode and Browser mode), and the credit estimate you see before a job runs already reflects them: copied variants add nothing, translated variants count as languages.

Do regional variants cost extra credits?
No when they are copied. A regional variant such as Portuguese (Brazil) receives the parent language's translation at no extra credits. A variant switched to Translate mode — needed for script variants such as Traditional Chinese — is a real, separate translation and is billed like any other language.
What is the difference between Copy and Translate for a variant?
Copy publishes the parent language's text into the variant's locale slot on YouTube; it is free and right whenever the variant shares the parent's language and script. Translate produces a separate translation aimed at that variant — required where copying would be wrong (a different script) and optional where regional wording matters (Latin-American versus European Spanish).
