How YouTube thumbnail URLs actually work
Every public YouTube thumbnail is a plain static file on YouTube's image server, at a predictable address: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/<VIDEO_ID>/<size>.jpg. The video ID is the 11 characters after v= in a watch link (or after the last slash in a youtu.be link). Swap the size and you get the same picture at a different resolution — this tool just checks which ones exist and hands you the file.
The five size names
maxresdefault (1280×720), sddefault (640×480), hqdefault (480×360), mqdefault (320×180) and default (120×90). The last three exist for every public video. The first two exist only sometimes — which is the next section.
Why the HD version sometimes 404s
YouTube generates the 1280×720 file only when the frame it derived the thumbnail from was at least that big. Older uploads, videos published in 360p or 480p, some live archives and some Shorts never get one, and the 640×480 file can be missing for the same reason. Nothing is broken and nothing is deleted — the file was simply never created. This page checks both before showing you a dead link, and marks them as not stored.
A word on copyright
Thumbnails belong to the creators who made them. Downloading one for reference, research, a commentary or reaction video, a competitor study, or for your own channel's videos is ordinary practice. Re-uploading someone else's thumbnail as the face of your own video is not — that is their work, and YouTube treats it accordingly.

Is this thumbnail downloader free?
Yes — free on every plan, including the free one, and no credits are charged. You sign in with Google once: the lookup spends our shared YouTube API quota, and an anonymous page would be used as a public API proxy. No extension, no watermark, and nothing you paste is stored. There is also a generous daily limit per account.
Can I download the thumbnail of a YouTube Short?
Yes. Paste the /shorts/ link and you get the same sizes as any other video — YouTube stores Shorts thumbnails as ordinary 16:9 files and crops them for the vertical player, so there is no separate vertical file to download.
Why is the 1280×720 HD thumbnail missing for some videos?
YouTube only creates the maxresdefault file when the source frame was at least 1280×720. Older videos, low-resolution uploads and some live archives stop at 640×480 or 480×360. This page checks first and shows you the largest size that really exists.
Can I use a downloaded thumbnail on my own video?
Only if it is your own thumbnail, or you have the creator's permission. Using someone else's thumbnail as your own is a copyright problem on YouTube. Studying it, referencing it in commentary, or comparing it with yours is fine.
Do you store the links I paste?
No. We ask YouTube's public API for the video's title and channel so you can confirm you have the right video, fetch the image file, and hand it to you. We keep a per-connection counter for rate limiting and nothing else.
